Course description

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a expanding area of technological development, particularly in research and innovation. But when it comes to leveraging AI in academic workflows, it’s essential to understand both its technical mechanics and the ethical responsibilities involved.

Academics, researchers, and students need to know how AI works, how it can be applied, and how to use it safely within our institution. Understanding what is safe to share—and ensuring sensitive information like intellectual property, unpublished research, or confidential data remains protected—is key to using AI ethically and effectively in research.

In this webinar, developed by researchers for researchers, Glen Charlton (Lead Data Scientist) and Dr Ankit Beniwal (Digital Research Analyst) from Intersect Australia, will explore:

• A brief history of AI, core definitions, and its technical mechanics
• What AI looks like today, featuring real-life examples across multiple industries
• The foundational elements of AI tools and models
• Perspectives on how to use AI ethically, responsibly, and safely at Flinders University.

During the webinar, will also hear from Dr Milica Symul, Chief Research Development Officer, who will give a brief update on AI plans and policies at Flinders University.

This webinar is aimed at entry level researchers who are beginning their journey in AI and no prior knowledge or experience is required in using the AI tools at Flinders.

The presentation will be followed by an interactive Q&A session with attendees.
