Grant Reviewer Feedback: How to understand, interpret and use this information

Course description

In this session, Simon Brennan, Chief Research Development Officer, Research Development and Support, and Lucy Sheehan-Hennessy, Senior Grants Officer, will explore: 

  • How to access the feedback.
  • How to interpret the different components of the feedback.
  • For the ARC: why there are likely differences between the scores from the Detailed Assessors and General Assessors.
  • For the ARC: What the feedback can tell us about applications in the highest and lowest bands.
  • How to strategically use this feedback to inform your resubmission.
  • For the NHMRC: Understanding the category descriptors relative to your assessment feedback.

Following the presentations about the ARC and NHMRC feedback, we will open the floor for questions. Professor Vincent Bulone, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Performance and Impact) and experienced ARC College of Experts member, will join our presenters to share his insights and experience.

Are you curious about what type of feedback you can expect on your grant application?

As of 2023, the ARC provides unsuccessful applicants with feedback. Specifically, unsuccessful applicants can access: 

  • Banded feedback,
  • Detailed Assessors’ scores, assessments and rankings, and
  • General Assessors’ scores and rankings.  

NHMRC provides peer reviewer feedback to applications under a number of its schemes, applicants are able to access:

  • Individual scores for each assessment criteria,
  • Funding Cut off for applications and overall funded rate in each scoring category, and
  • Peer reviewer comments from each reviewer.

This session will be run via MS Teams. A link will be sent to you via calendar invitation prior to the session.
