Budgeting for research grants: principles, practice and insights

Course description

Budgeting is a critical component of grant competitiveness, not an administrative afterthought.

This session will position research budgeting as an integral part of project design and feasibility, with a practical focus on developing high quality budgets for competitive ARC, NHMRC & MRFF research grants.

Designed for researchers and research support staff preparing competitive research grant applications, the session will cover:

  • core budgeting principles
  • what assessors look for in strong budgets
  • common pitfalls, and
  • how budgets are used to assess feasibility, value for money and risk.

The session will also provide practical insights into scheme specific expectations, including eligible costs, personnel costing, indexation, and writing clear budget justifications.

Participants will hear from senior staff in the Research Partnerships team and the Grants & Tenders team, and see a demonstration of the Flinders TIED Budget Research Tool to support accurate salary and project cost forecasting.

There will be time for discussion and questions.

This session will be online via MS Teams. You will receive a link via calendar invitation prior to the session. Please email researcher.development@flinders.edu.au if you have any questions.
