Designing a new topic or looking to refresh an existing one?

This practical workshop will introduce you to the tools, templates, and design approaches used to develop Flinders Online topics. Drawing on lessons learned from the Flinders Online project, you will explore strategies for designing clear, engaging, and student-centred learning experiences that support success in a contemporary higher education environment.

Through guided activities and examples, you will work through key stages of the topic design process using a backwards design approach, including defining learning outcomes, aligning assessments, mapping the student learning journey, structuring modules, designing learning activities, and planning facilitation. You will also be introduced to practical design documents and planning tools used within the Flinders Online project that can be adapted for broader topic development and review.

Whether you are developing a new topic or enhancing an existing one, this session will provide practical resources, structured design approaches, and dedicated time to apply them to your own context. You will leave with actionable ideas and tools to support the design of an engaging and coherent learning experience.

This session is delivered as a 60-minute facilitated workshop, followed by an optional 30-minute working period where you can continue applying the tools and templates to their own topic with support from a Learning Designer.
