Meet the Archive: “Sexuality and Gender: LGBTQ History and Culture since 1940, Part II”

Course description

This session introduces Archives of Sexuality and Gender: LGBTQ History and Culture Since 1940, Part II, the second volume in Gale’s landmark primary‑source collection documenting the social, cultural, political and legal history of LGBTQ communities from 1940 onward. You’ll explore a wide range of fully searchable materials—including periodicals, newsletters, manuscripts, government records, organisational papers, correspondence, posters and ephemera—curated by leading scholars in sexuality and gender studies.

The session will unpack how this collection highlights underrepresented voices and communities within the LGBTQ movement, supporting deeper investigation into activism, cultural expression, civil rights developments and the formation of LGBTQ communities across different decades and regions. By the end, you’ll understand how to apply the archive’s unique materials to enrich research, teaching and scholarship across gender studies, history, sociology, political science and related fields.
