Preparing for a career outside academia: A workshop for HDR students and supervisors

Course description

Plenty of skills are developed in undertaking doctoral qualifications that are relevant for success in multiple roles and sectors. This workshop, delivered online by Sequitur Consulting, will engage participants in discussion on identifying the transferable skills attained, learning how to talk about those skills, and identifying suitable kinds of roles to align with those skills. It will also outline strategies for finding potential roles to apply for, as well as providing the knowledge needed to decode different kinds of job ads.

The discussion will centre around the following topics:

  • Why you might consider a career beyond academia
  • What non-academic jobs could I even search for?
  • What skills do I even have & how can I talk about them?
  • How to search for non-academic jobs - Identifying suitable roles & non-academic job search strategies
  • Decoding different kinds of job ads

This workshop is targeted at HDR students looking for a career in industry, but is open to all researchers and HDR supervisors.
