What does purposeful supervision of international students look like in practice? Inspired by a formative “midnight coffee” moment with his own PhD supervisor, Professor Udoy Saikia reflects on a philosophy grounded in empathy, trust, and high expectations.
Drawing on over two decades at Flinders University and the supervision of more than 25 PhD candidates—most from diverse international backgrounds—this presentation explores how culturally responsive mentorship can foster research independence, resilience, and global impact. Moving beyond thesis completion, it highlights strategies that equip international students with the confidence, networks, and transferable skills to thrive in academia, government, and international organisations.
Professor Udoy Saikia is the winner of the 2025 Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in HDR Supervision.
This session will also be available online for those who are unable to make it in person. If you would like the link to join, please contact researcher.development@flinders.edu.au
