HDR Supervision: Supervising Large Cohorts of Research Students

Course description

This interactive masterclass by Hugh Kearns from ThinkWell is designed for HDR supervisors who manage large cohorts of research students and are seeking to refine their supervisory approach. The session provides an opportunity to connect with peers, share practical strategies, and reflect on common challenges associated with supervising multiple candidates simultaneously.

Through facilitated discussion, attendees will explore what works well in their own practice, consider approaches to managing workload and student expectations, and discuss strategies for fostering a positive and supportive research environment. Participants are encouraged to raise issues from their own supervisory contexts and learn from the collective experience of the group.

Topics for discussion may include:

  • Finding time for individual students within large cohorts
  • Delegating tasks and responsibilities effectively
  • Creating a collaborative and supportive cohort culture
  • Encouraging peer mentoring and student-led support
  • Responding to diverse student needs, backgrounds, and working styles
  • Other challenges and ideas raised by participants

This masterclass will focus on practical, adaptable strategies that HDR supervisors can apply immediately in their supervisory practice.

Attendance at this workshop will contribute 15 program points towards the HDR Supervisor Development Program.
