Accidental counselling

Course description

• Do you sometimes find yourself in the 'helper' role for others in the workplace?
• Are you the type of person in whom others confide their concerns and problems?
• Do you feel like you want to respond more effectively, appropriately, and compassionately, while still having enough time to get on with your daily tasks?

If you answered 'yes' to any of the above, this may be the course for you.

'Accidental counselling' happens when a person who is not trained or employed as a counsellor is placed in that role by a staff member (or student) due to issues which arise from conversations in the workplace.  This course provides an introduction to person-centered counselling techniques which will provide skills to listen more effectively and respond respectfully when you find yourself in the 'accidental counsellor' role.

The course will not teach you to be a counsellor; it will not equip you to 'solve' people's problems; nor does it take the place of appropriate referrals to professional assistance.  It will, however, give you the skills to respond to the concerns and problems of others in a sensitive and respectful manner.
