Working with a Professional Editor

Course description

This is a professional development workshop for RHD candidates who are close to finalising their theses for examination. The presenters will talk about the university’s expectations, the role of the supervisor, the candidate and the editor, the national guidelines for editing and proofreading RHD theses, editing standards and best practice principles.

What you will learn

Issues to be addressed and discussed:

  • What is a professional editor and how can they add value to your thesis?
  • What do editors do and what are the issues in working with an external editor?
  • What is the FU policy and national guidelines for thesis editing/proofreading?
  • What is the role of the supervisor, the candidate and the editor in thesis finalisation?
  • What is acceptable best practice in working with a professional editor?

During the session, a sample text will be distributed to identify problems from the candidate/editor/supervisor’s perspective and to illustrate the distinction between the supervisor’s and editor’s input.
