Biosafety Training – Storage and Transport of Biological Hazards

Course description

Using a real transport non-compliance case study, this session explores the requirements for safely storing and transporting genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and pathogenic microorganisms.

This session is for staff, students and supervisors who work with genetically modified organisms and/or microorganisms. 

Participants will learn key regulatory and University obligations, common compliance issues, and practical measures to store and transport biological hazardous materials safely and legally, including transport to and from external organisations. 

Presented by Belinda Cox, Biosafety Officer, this session will cover:

• Key regulations, guidelines and standards, including:
  • Gene Technology Act 2000 and Gene Technology Regulations 2001
  • OGTR Guidelines for the Transport, Storage and Disposal of GMOs
  • AS/NZS 2243.3 Microbiological Safety and Containment
  • IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations for road, rail and air transport of biological materials
• Flinders University Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) approval requirements, procedures and responsibilities
• Lessons learned from a transport non-compliance incident and strategies to improve biosafety compliance.
