Course description

The Masterclass series is an initiative program of the College of Medicine & Public Health's Learning & Teaching Academy.  The CMPH Masterclass series enables participants to get expert input on a topic, ask questions, and dispel myths. Active Learning in both in-person and online classes: What works?

There is increasing recognition of the value of active learning approaches such as group work in fostering student engagement, learning, and development of skills for future careers. This masterclass facilitated by Professor Michelle French (University of Toronto) will focus on the best approaches to promote active learning and student collaboration for both in-person and online classes. Topics covered will include: how best to prepare students for active learning sessions; choosing the right technology; use of case studies to foster interest; and specific considerations for online and large classes. During the workshop, participants will have opportunities to share their own successes and challenges with active learning in their own teaching. It is expected that participants will leave the masterclass energized with new strategies and approaches to enhance student engagement, enjoyment, collaboration and learning. This Masterclass is relevant for staff across a range of courses and Teaching Programs. 

BioMichelle French is a Professor, Teaching Stream, and Vice Chair Academic (Undergraduate) in the Department of Physiology at University of Toronto. She recently served as Special Adviser to the Dean on Innovation in Undergraduate Education in the Faculty of Medicine. Over the past 22 years, she has taught university courses in the life sciences and scientific communication to classes ranging from 30 to 1500 students. Michelle holds a BSc and an MSc from U of T and a PhD in physiology from Western University. Her post-doctoral studies were conducted at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research in Melbourne and at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Her research focusses on strategies to improve student engagement and learning and methods to develop transferrable skills. Michelle is the recipient of 11 teaching awards including an Excellence in Life Sciences Award: Undergraduate Teaching from the Faculty of Medicine and a President's Teaching Award from University of Toronto.

Peer Evaluator (Teaching) Training: Workshop 1

This is part 1 of a two-part workshop that will cover the processes and skills required for undertaking the role of a peer evaluator for  peer evaluation of teaching at Flinders University.  Both parts 1 and part 2 will need to be completed. The workshop will be presented by Cassandra Hood and will cover values in peer evaluation, the peer evaluation process, roles and responsibilities as a peer evaluator, resources available and the art of the peer evaluation conversation.  Opportunities to undertake your own peer evaluation of teaching will be provided between Parts 1 and 2.

Bio: Cassandra Hood is an Academic Developer with the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching. She is an alumni of Flinders University and has worked across a variety of inpatient, community health and private practice settings including Flinders Medical Centre, Southern Adelaide Health and Adelaide Nutrition Care (her own medical nutrition therapy consultancy). An author and lecturer she has lectured a variety of health and education undergraduate and post-graduate courses as well as at TAFE and other higher education institutions. She has been involved in adult education and training in an ongoing capacity across her work and has presented at a variety of conferences in areas including HIV nutrition through to body image, chronic disease prevention and peer review of teaching. Her previous role was with the Flinders Human Behaviour and Health Research Unit (School of Medicine) as a Senior Research Officer and Lecturer

You can’t ask Michael Baigent (international expert in psychiatry) that!

This Masterclass was presented by Michael Baigent who is a Professor in the department of psychiatry, Flinders Medical Centre and Flinders University, College of Medicine and Public Health. He is a psychiatrist and addiction medicine specialist. He is the Head of the Flinders Psychological Therapy Services which includes the Centre for Anxiety and Related Disorders, IAPT@flinders, and the Statewide Gambling Therapy Services. In 2011, he was appointed to the national board of directors for Beyond Blue after previously serving as clinical advisor from 2006. Michael's research interest and work has included doctor and medical student mental health. He has been involved with the Medical Course development and teaching since his appointment in 1993.

In this session, Michael responding to audience questions related to student or staff wellbeing.

Inaugural Master Class: You can't ask Lambert Schuwirth (leading international assessment expert) that!

The inaugural Masterclass was presented by Professor Lambert Schuwirth who is one of the world’s experts in health professions education assessment, specifically programmatic assessment. In 2019, he was named by The Australian’s Annual Research magazine as the top medical education researcher in Australia, and in 2021, he was awarded the ANZAHPE Award for Health Professions Education Research by the Australian and New Zealand Association for Health Professional Educators in recognition of his outstanding achievements in health professions education research.
