Writing for 'The Conversation'

Course description

The Flinders research community is invited to a one-hour online session on how and why to write for The Conversation.

The Conversation Australia attracts 13.8 million unique reads worldwide each month through its Creative Commons republications in outlets that include the ABC, IFL Science, Channel News Asia, Apple News and many more.

In this session, The Conversation Executive Editor Liz Minchin will cover:

  • the benefits of writing for The Conversation
  • what sorts of ideas the editors are seeking
  • how to pitch an idea
  • how editors decide what pitches to accept
  • what happens if you get accepted / rejected
  • how to write for The Conversation's non-academic readership
  • a Q&A

About your presenter: Executive Editor Liz Minchin

Liz Minchin is a Walkley award-winning journalist and author. She joined The Conversation in 2012 and has been Executive Editor since 2016.

Liz works closely with our 3 NZ editors and NZ partner universities. She also regularly delivers Pitching and Writing Masterclasses. In 2010, she co-wrote 'Screw Light Bulbs': a book explaining bigger-picture climate solutions.


After we hear from The Conversation, Karen Ashford, Director, Media and Communications at Flinders, will discuss the support available for researchers and share her experience with the benefits of showcasing your research in The Conversation. Karen will also be available to answer any questions you may have.


This session will be run via MS Teams and a link will be sent to you via calendar invitation prior to the session.
