Over 20% of the Australian population lives with disability. Despite this, many people lack confidence when interacting with people with disability. This workshop recognises that disabilities come in many forms, and most are not visible, and that meeting the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 can be challenging for supervisors.
This workshop will be facilitated by a Professional Advisor from JobAccess, David Tran.
You will be encouraged to think about barriers to your existing recruitment practices. You will also receive advice on how to make small but important changes in the workplace that may support developing confidence and competence when it comes to disability and employment.
The session will be interactive with practical information, activities and a brief video. Key points covered in the session include:
Disability: a brief overview
Mental health and work
Barriers, stereotypes and myths
What does the law say?
Understanding and making reasonable adjustments
Communication tips
Partnerships to support your commitment
Tools and resources
Discrimination
Managing employees with disability
Workshop
This workshop is designed for human resources practitioners, but also open to those who supervise or manage staff with disabilities, and others who would like greater insight into disability.
The session aims to demonstrate that disability is part of human diversity and that you are likely to be touched by disability in the workplace or at a personal level at some stage of your life.
Our goal is for you to start or further your understanding of disability - perhaps moving from being a little wary or unsure about what it all means, to feeling more confident.
By the end of the session you will have greater insight into disability and employment and a better understanding of how to create a more inclusive, supportive workplace for all your staff - including people with disability.
