Scaling Research: Preparing for a large-scale grant

Course description

Are you interested in applying for grants to support large-scale, multi-year programs of research? Scaling up from projects to programs, hubs and centres requires significant lead time, a strategic approach, and careful planning.

Please join us for this session with the Research Partnerships team who will provide advice on how to transition from thinking about project-based grant applications to large-scale bids. This session will cover strategies and tips to support applications to key funders including the Australian Research Council (ARC) and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

Presented by Dr Rui Hoo, Research Development Director (Health) and Karen Burke, Research Partnerships Director, this session will cover:

  • The funding landscape: We will give an overview of Australian large-scale grant funding opportunities from the ARC and NHMRC.
  • Characteristics of a large-scale research program: We will explore the difference between a project vs. program. We will also discuss the importance of the track record of the leader, researcher capacity and capability, multidisciplinary collaboration, building teams, and communication. We will discuss how to establish and leverage partnerships with academic, industry, government, and community/end-user stakeholders for feasibility, and to deliver impact.
  • How to get started, key strategies and best practice: We will discuss how to get started, strategies you can use to scale and develop a complex research program, and what is best practice in this process.

There will also be an opportunity for Q&A at the end of the session.

This session will be run via MS Teams and a link will be sent to you via calendar invitation prior to the session.
