Project Management for Researchers

Course description

Building project management skills is increasingly important for researchers wanting to maximise use of time and resources to meet project objectives. Project management strategies provide structure and processes for managing both individual and complex team research projects.

While project management training and resources are tailored to business contexts, using project management strategies in research requires adaptation of traditional project management methodologies to the requirements, uncertainties, and culture of the research environment.

This one-day workshop distils the key principles and practices of project management for researchers, informed by research, best practice and over 15 years’ experience managing research projects.

The content is relevant to researchers at all stages of their career, in any discipline and for projects involving individuals to large teams. This session will support researchers in planning research proposals, implementing new projects and monitoring progress and completion of current projects.

Presented by Joann Cattlin, this hands-on workshop will:

  • develop researchers’ skills and confidence in applying project management practices and tools at each stage of the research lifecycle.
  • involve participants applying project management activities and tools to their own research projects working in small groups and individually.
  • assist researchers in developing a range of resources that are customised to their own research project needs.

About your Facilitator:

Joann Cattlin has over 15 years’ experience managing externally funded research projects in a variety of disciplines at the University of Melbourne and RMIT University. She has managed projects involving individual researchers and small teams, as well as complex, inter-disciplinary partnerships involving multiple institutions, industry and government partners, including an ARC Linkage Project and Industrial Transformation Research Hub.  Joann draws on these experiences, current research and best practice in project management to provide training for researchers and professional staff in universities. She presents workshops and seminars on project management and research engagement, and has facilitated several communities of practice to support research capability development.

Joann has also worked as an academic librarian and researcher. She has a Bachelor of Arts, Master of Information Management and is currently undertaking a PhD at RMIT on the role of the university in enabling the societal impact of research.
