Regulatory Considerations for Researchers Engaging Internationally

Course description

Researchers proposing to engage in an activity or partnership with a foreign organisation or individual will face numerous issues that they will need to consider, such as:

  • Assessing and mitigating the risk of loss of IP to malign foreign actors and the reputational damage which might then ensue,
  • Whether such arrangements need to be notified both internally and to various regulatory authorities (and if so, how),
  • Whether their research falls within the scope of Defence Export Controls
  • Whether their research is affected by the Autonomous Sanctions Act.

This information session will give the research community an overview of the various requirements that apply to the University's foreign interactions and how these affect research involving foreign parties.

Presented by Kim Nenadovich (Governance, Legal and Risk) and Hendryk Flaegel (Manager, Ethics, Compliance and Integrity) this session will cover:

  • the basics of foreign interactions, arrangements and interference legislation
  • obligations to declare foreign affiliations under the amended Conflict of Interest Policy
  • an overview of Defence Export Controls and the Autonomous Sanctions Act
  • how the various requirements may affect researchers
  • what you need to do and when
  • how to access information and support.

There will be time for questions and discussion.

This session will be run online via MS Teams. A link will be sent to you prior to the session via calendar invitation.
