ELSP Module: Academic Writing

Course description

Learn strategies for planning and structuring your academic assignments, presenting a clear position on your topic, improving your paraphrasing and producing clear and coherent academic writing.

Weekly attendance is expected and students should carefully consider their ability to commit time to attend workshops during peak assessment periods. A Certificate of Completion will be awarded at the end of each semester to students who attend a minimum of 6 workshops within a module.

Who should attend

Any domestic or international NESB student who would like to improve their academic writing skills.

What you will learn

This module consists of a series of eight consecutive two-hour workshops focusing on key concepts for effective academic writing. In this module you will be able to:
  • analyse your task and prepare an outline
  • improve your ability to develop arguments and justify your claims
  • develop skills in paraphrasing, summarising, quoting and using citations to support your position identify and write effective introductory, concluding and summary paragraphs 
  • improve your editing and proofreading skills to review your own work

Prerequisites / assumed knowledge

Students may enroll in up to two ELSP modules per semester.
